KEVIN BRACY'S SPEAK UP / SPEAK OFF COMPETITION • OFFICIAL RULES & CONTEST STRUCTURE


The information listed below is subject to modification. Any changes to the rules or contest structure will be announced to all registered participants prior to the start of competition.

Preliminary auditions for the competition will be held Friday afternoon (March 6, 2009 at 3:30pm) to establish a field of contestants.

Each qualifying contestant will be given 2 minutes to deliver a message in front of an audience and 3 judges.

  • Message must be at least 1 minute 55 seconds.
     
  • Message cannot exceed 2 minutes 7 seconds.
     
  • Contestants will not be allowed to use clocks or timers*
     
  • Messages that are too short or too long will be disqualified.

Contestants will be judged in the following 8 categories:

  • Clarity of message
  • Voice Inflection / Vocal Variety
  • Body Language / Word Congruency
  • Overall Stage Presence
  • Authenticity / Believability
  • Command of the English Language
  • Enunciation
  • Pace of Delivery

There will be two rounds of competition:

ROUND ONE:

  • The first round will be judged exclusively by our panel of judges to narrow down the field to 5 finalists.

ROUND TWO:

  • The 5 finalists will be required to deliver a second message following the guidelines above.
    NOTE: The second message must be a totally different speech from the first.
     
  • Audience members will be given evaluation forms for each finalist, which will be used in conjunction with the judges scores to determine a winner.

The judges' decision will be final.


* You will not have a counter on stage to know where you are with regards to time. Developing your "sixth sense" for timing is an important skill for speakers to have for many reasons that will be explained during the conference.  So be sure to practice your flow!
